“Mothers, first witnesses to the life God gave us” At the fourth station, Jesus meets His mother. Jesus meets many people along the way, but it is of course fitting that she be the first to meet Him. For she was the first to witness the glory of Jesus as Human and Divine. She was the first to witness New Life. In the same way, we honor our mothers, who were also the first to witness the life God gave us, long before anyone else knew, long before we even knew our own name.. . .
For this gesture, we place our hands onto our bellies, framing our belly button with hands shaped in a small heart. We honor our connection to our mothers by honoring the physical connection we once had to our mothers. We give thanks to God for life but thank our mothers for becoming the first witnesses to the life God gave us.
